Why Choose EMDR
Proven Results, Trusted Worldwide
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an extensively researched, proven therapy designed to help people recover from trauma and PTSD.
Process What Happened
EMDR helps address the experiences behind current struggles. People may choose EMDR when they recognize that past experiences are still affecting their emotions, beliefs, relationships, or reactions in the present. EMDR can address past experiences, present triggers, and future situations, rather than focusing only on current symptoms.
Reduce the Impact
EMDR does not require extensive talking about the trauma. Someone may choose EMDR because they do not want to repeatedly describe every detail of a distressing experience. Although talking about experiences can be part of treatment, EMDR allows clients to work with memories without requiring the same level of detailed verbal processing or prolonged exposure used in some other approaches.
Work Beyond Words
EMDR addresses thoughts, emotions, and body responses together. EMDR works with different aspects of an experience, including images, negative beliefs, emotions, and physical sensations. This can be helpful for someone who understands something intellectually but continues to experience an emotional or physical reaction to it. The goal is not to erase the memory, but to help it become less distressing and allow more adaptive beliefs and responses to develop.
Develop a Healthier Way
EMDR is a structured, evidence-supported approach. Someone may choose EMDR because they want a structured therapeutic process with an established protocol. The EMDR Institute describes an eight-phase approach that allows time for preparation before beginning memory reprocessing. EMDR also has substantial research support, particularly for PTSD and trauma-related difficulties, and is included in recommendations from several professional health organizations and clinical guidelines.
